Kampen sits on the hill east of Tøyen and is one of Oslo's best preserved wooden-house neighbourhoods. The houses went up from the 1860s onwards, largely self-built by workers on plots outside the city boundary of the day, where the rule requiring masonry construction did not apply. In the 1960s and 1970s the whole area was zoned for demolition in favour of blocks and roads, but a long-running residents' campaign stopped the plans and the buildings were preserved and restored instead. The result is steep, narrow streets of small timber houses in strong colours, the brick Kampen church of 1882 on the summit, and Kampen park as the local gathering point. The area is strongly residential with a limited hospitality offering, a few cafes and a handful of neighbourhood kitchens, but Tøyen and Grønland are minutes away down the hill.
