City info
Krakow, Poland's former royal capital, is one of Europe's best-preserved historic cities and, almost uniquely among major Polish cities, it survived the Second World War largely intact. At its heart lies Rynek Glowny, the largest medieval market square in Europe, ringed by townhouses and dominated by the Renaissance Cloth Hall and the twin-towered St Mary's Basilica, from which a trumpeter sounds the hejnal on the hour. Above the Vistula river rises Wawel Hill, with its royal castle and cathedral, the symbolic seat of Polish kings. South of the centre, the atmospheric Kazimierz district, once the city's Jewish quarter, is now a bohemian tangle of courtyards, synagogues, cafes and markets. A UNESCO World Heritage site and a university city since 1364, Krakow pairs cobbled medieval streets and royal grandeur with a youthful, creative energy, making it Poland's cultural and tourist heartland.
