More information

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, grew from a small fishing village around a 13th-century dam on the Amstel river into one of the world's great trading cities during the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. Its defining feature is the Grachtengordel, the elegant ring of concentric canals, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, lined with gabled merchant houses and crossed by hundreds of bridges, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

City info

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, grew from a small fishing village around a 13th-century dam on the Amstel river into one of the world's great trading cities during the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. Its defining feature is the Grachtengordel, the elegant ring of concentric canals, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, lined with gabled merchant houses and crossed by hundreds of bridges, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Compact, low-rise and famously bicycle-friendly, the city packs in world-class museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House. Distinct neighbourhoods give it texture: the village-like Jordaan with its galleries and brown cafes, the market-filled De Pijp, the historic Red Light District (De Wallen) and the creative, post-industrial Amsterdam Noord across the IJ. Home to some 180 nationalities yet intimate in scale, Amsterdam is known for its tolerant spirit, cosy canal-side charm and rich cultural life.
