City info
Bergen, Norway's second-largest city, sits on the country's west coast among steep mountains and deep fjords, and is widely regarded as the gateway to the famous fjord landscapes. Founded in the 11th century, it was for centuries Norway's most important city and a key trading post of the Hanseatic League. That legacy survives in Bryggen, the row of pointed timber merchant houses along the old harbour, now a UNESCO World Heritage site and the city's most recognisable image. Surrounded by seven hills, several reachable by funicular or cable car for sweeping views, Bergen mixes maritime industry, marine research and a strong cultural life, including a celebrated music scene and the lively Fish Market. It is also famous for its rain, which falls on most days of the year. Compact, scenic and steeped in history, Bergen balances small-city charm with its role as western Norway's cultural capital.
