Kristiansand is the largest city on Norway's southern coast and the gateway to the sunny, holiday-loving Sorlandet region. Founded in 1641 by King Christian IV, it was laid out on a strict grid plan known as the Kvadraturen, which still defines the walkable, low-rise centre. Blessed with some of Norway's warmest, driest summer weather, it has a relaxed, seaside-resort atmosphere centred on Bystranda, a sandy urban beach right beside the city centre, and the lively fish market and Fiskebrygga harbour quarter. The picturesque Posebyen district preserves rows of old white wooden houses. Kristiansand is a popular family destination, home to Dyreparken, one of Norway's most visited zoos and amusement parks, and to the Kilden performing arts centre on the waterfront. As a major ferry port with connections to Denmark, it is also a busy summer entry point to Norway, blending coastal charm with an easygoing southern character.
