Central Bergen sits in a bowl between seven mountains, which keeps the city compact: most of the nightlife is within a fifteen-minute walk. Bryggen, the row of pointed timber houses along the Vågen inlet, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and marks the Hanseatic era, when Bergen was Norway's most important trading town. Torgallmenningen is the open axis through the centre, with the Fish Market at one end and the Fløibanen funicular up the mountainside at the other. The student scene around Nygårdshøyden and the university keeps prices at some venues lower than elsewhere on the west coast. Venues range from classic pubs inside the timber houses and brewery taprooms to wine bars and coffee rooms. It rains on most days of the year, so the offering is indoors by nature and outdoor seating is limited and seasonal.
