Vesterbro stretches west of the old city gate and was, for much of the 20th century, Copenhagen's gritty working-class and red-light district. Decades of urban renewal since the 1980s have transformed it into one of the city's most fashionable and creative quarters without fully erasing its rough edges. Istedgade still mixes hostels and adult shops with specialty coffee bars, and the former Meatpacking District (Kodbyen), a cluster of white industrial halls, now houses galleries, restaurants and nightlife. Vaernedamsvej, often called the city's most Parisian street, is lined with wine shops and delis. The neighbourhood draws students, young families and creatives, giving it a lived-in, diverse energy. Close to the Central Station and Tivoli Gardens, Vesterbro balances everyday local life with destinations that pull visitors from across the city, making it one of the clearest examples of Copenhagen's late-20th-century reinvention.
