Central Stavanger wraps around the Vågen harbour basin and is small enough to cross on foot in a quarter of an hour. On the west side lies Gamle Stavanger, one of northern Europe's best-preserved collections of white-painted wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and at the middle stands Stavanger Cathedral of around 1125, the oldest in Norway to have stayed in continuous use. Nightlife concentrates on Øvre Holmegate, better known as Fargegaten, where the facades were painted in strong colours in 2005 to rescue the street from decline and which is now packed with cafes, bars and small shops. The oil industry has made the city international and prices high, but the street art from the Nuart festival and an active brewing scene give the centre a more informal feel than its economy suggests.
