Kraków Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Real Prices and Where to Drink Nearby

Kraków's Christmas market opens 27 November 2026 on Rynek Główny. Dates, what a grzaniec really costs, and cheaper bars two minutes off the square.

2 November 2026·6 min read·Krakow

Kraków's Christmas market (Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy) is one of the most photographed in Europe, and it earns it: wooden stalls, lights and the smell of grilled oscypek fill Rynek Główny, the vast medieval square around the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), with St Mary's Basilica towering over it all. It is also, by Polish standards, expensive. This guide covers the 2026 dates, what things actually cost based on dated price reports, and – because this is PilsPosten – where to get a proper drink for a fraction of the market price without walking more than a few minutes.

Dates and opening hours 2026

  • Opens: Friday 27 November 2026 (announced by Visit Kraków and the organiser, ARTIM)
  • Closes: 6 January 2027 – provisional. Some guides still list 1 January, which was last season's closing date.
  • Stalls: roughly 10:00–20:00 daily; food stalls can stay open until 22:00.
  • 24 December: hours not confirmed for 2026 – don't plan your trip around Christmas Eve at the market.
  • Entry: free.

The official opening ceremony, traditionally held after the hejnał trumpet call from St Mary's tower, hadn't been dated at the time of writing. In recent years it has taken place on the first Saturday of the market.

Don't miss: the szopki contest on 3 December

On Thursday 3 December 2026 at 10:00, the 84th Kraków Nativity Scene Contest (Konkurs Szopek Krakowskich), run by the Museum of Kraków, takes place on the market square. Szopki are not your average nativity scenes: they are tall, glittering miniature castles built from foil, card and wood, borrowing their towers from St Mary's and Wawel. The tradition is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Get there a little before 10 if you want to see them up close – it's the one thing at the market you won't find anywhere else in Europe.

What things cost at the market

There is no official price list, so here are dated reports from the Polish press and market guides:

ItemPriceSeason reported
Small grzaniec (mulled wine, ~200 ml)~18 zł2024
Grzaniec galicyjski, 400 ml45 zł2024
Grilled oscypek17 zł2024
Zapiekanka38 zł2024
Żurek with a small mulled wine35 zł2025

Expect 2026 to land at the same level or a little higher.

Two warnings. First, some stalls price grilled meat and other dishes per 100 g, not per portion – in early 2025 Polish media reported a visitor who paid 354.90 zł for two dishes. Ask for the total before anything gets cut. Second, In Your Pocket's 2025 ranking placed Kraków last of the six Polish markets it tested, mostly because of hot-food prices. The setting is unbeatable; the food value isn't.

The PilsPosten angle: drink just off the square

Here is the maths that matters. A ~200 ml grzaniec on the square costs around 18 zł. In our Kraków data, a full half-litre of beer in an Old Town bar costs between 9 and 21 zł.

BaniaLuka (Floriańska) – about 9 zł per 0.5 L, the cheapest in our data. It's on the pedestrian street running north from the square to the Florian Gate. Standing bar, high tables, no frills.

Viva la Pinta (Floriańska) – 18 zł. Polish craft beer on the same street, if you want something better than a mass-market lager.

Cafe Szał – 21 zł, the priciest in our Old Town data, with a terrace view over Rynek Główny. Worth it for the view if the terrace is open when you visit.

Kazimierz, 15–20 minutes' walk south-east, is cheaper still: Propaganda pours a half-litre for 13 zł, and Alchemia (18 zł) runs a weekday happy hour from 09:00 to 17:00 at 16 zł.

Our suggested routine: one grzaniec at the market for the atmosphere, then move off the square for the rest of the evening. If you see grzaniec piwny (mulled beer with honey and spices) at a stall, it's worth trying once.

One thing to know if you're buying bottles: Kraków bans alcohol sales in shops overnight. The ban has run from midnight to 05:30 since 2023, and an extension to 22:00–06:00 was announced for September 2026, though we couldn't confirm it has taken effect. Buy early. Bars are not affected.

What to eat and buy

  • Oscypek – smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra mountains, grilled and served with cranberry jam. The classic market snack.
  • Pierogi, kiełbasa and żurek – filling, but this is where the per-100 g pricing bites. Check before ordering.
  • Gingerbread (pierniki), often from Toruń.
  • Crafts – blown-glass baubles, wooden toys, embroidery, amber jewellery and small szopki to take home.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: the market is about a 10-minute walk from Kraków Główny station, and the airport train reaches the station in around 20 minutes.
  • Timing: weekday afternoons are calmest. Friday and Saturday evenings are packed.
  • Payment: cards are widely accepted, but carry some złoty for small stalls.
  • Crowds: the square gets crowded in December – keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
  • Make a weekend of it: Wawel Castle is a short walk south of the square, and Kazimierz is the better neighbourhood for an evening out.
