📝 Om stedet

Rock In has been part of Oslo's music scene since 1999, making it the city's longest-running metal bar. Now located at Grønland 14 in the lively Grønland district, the venue has moved homes a couple of times over the decades but has held on to the identity that drew people in from the start: loud music, a dark atmosphere, and a crowd that genuinely cares about rock and metal. Grønland itself is one of Oslo's more interesting neighbourhoods — multicultural, unpretentious, and well-connected by public transport. The T-bane station at Grønland is a short walk away, and the night bus network makes getting home after a late set relatively straightforward. The area is a contrast to the more polished parts of the city centre, which in many ways suits Rock In just fine. Inside, the bar is exactly what it promises to be: dim lighting, heavy music playing through the system, and walls that carry the visual language of metal culture. There is a pool table for those moments between sets when you need something to do with your hands. The drinks selection covers beer, wine, and spirits, and because hard liquor is served, entry is restricted to guests aged 20 and over. Pricing tends to be on the more reasonable side by Oslo standards, which, if you have visited Norway before, you will know is not a small compliment. The bar is open from 4 PM until 3 AM throughout the week. Live music is a regular feature. The in-house stage is modest in size but has hosted a surprisingly well-known list of artists over the years, including Testament, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Borknagar. Every Monday there is an open jam session, which gives local musicians and enthusiastic visitors alike a chance to get involved rather than just watch. Weekend gigs happen frequently, so checking the venue's schedule before visiting is worthwhile if you have a specific act in mind. For travellers looking to experience Oslo's metal community rather than its tourist circuit, Rock In offers a straightforward and unpretentious evening out.
