Sentralen occupies Øvre Slottsgate 3 in Kvadraturen, the old grid district at the heart of central Oslo, and it is genuinely difficult to describe in a single sentence. The building dates from the nineteenth century, when it housed Christiania Sparebank — at the time Norway's first savings bank — and that history is legible in every detail, from the vaulted interiors to the old accounting ledgers still sitting on the shelves of Gullbaren, the third-floor cocktail bar. The food and drink offer is spread across several distinct spaces within the same building. On the ground floor, behind glass paintings by artist Are Mokkelbost, Hitchhiker Restaurant serves street food from around the world for lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Saturday. It is informal and accessible, the kind of place where the focus is on flavour and variety rather than formality. Vinterhagen bar occupies the heart of the building and operates during the winter months. During the day it functions as an extension of the café, but from Thursday to Saturday evenings the lighting shifts and the music takes over. The atmosphere is shaped as much by the architecture as by anything else — which is a genuine advantage in a space like this. When spring arrives, the rooftop terrace Mynt opens. It has two levels connected by an amphitheatre in terracotta concrete, with plants, string lights, heaters, and a glass wall that looks six floors straight down into Vinterhagen. The views across Oslo's rooftops are a genuine draw. Sentralen Kafé is available during the day for coffee, meetings, and lunch. Beyond the hospitality offer, the building also functions as a cultural and events venue, with concert halls, rehearsal rooms, meeting rooms, and a podcast studio. Capacity across the spaces reaches up to around 800 people for larger events. Stortinget metro station is a short walk away, and the building has step-free access via lift from the main entrance.
